FLATBED DEMAND RISES – TRAILER ORDERS SET ANOTHER RECORD IN FEBRUARY

During the first full week of March, the flatbed load-to-truck ratio hit an all-time high of 88.5, up from 79.9 the previous week and up from 61.8 a month before. The national average rate was at $2.50/mile – an increase of 11 cents from the previous week.

Van and reefer trailer rates remained steady during this period, following a week of increased demand between Feb 25 – March 3. This stability is encouraging as vans had seen steady declines for six weeks before the end of February, while reefers have seen a higher-than-normal average spot rate for several weeks.

ACT – Americas Commercial Transportation Research, Co., LLC – has reported that trailer orders set an all-time record in February, following on the heels of a January that set a new record itself. ACT’s preliminary metric for February trailer orders is at 33,000, ahead of the official number that will be reported later this month. Through January and February 2018 net orders were up 24 percent from the same period last year.

“Fleets continue to place orders at a record pace, as last month was the strongest February order volume in industry history… That follows a record-setting string of months that started last fall. February’s all-time high also follows the strongest January in industry history,” said Frank Maly, ACT’s Director of CV Transportation Analysis and Research.
